Transportation Infrastructure and
Quality of Life
Mobility: Americans cherish their freedom of mobility. The ability to travel safely wherever and whenever opportunity calls is fundamental to our quality of life. America’s transportation system, led by the flagship Interstate system of highways, makes possible the connectivity and freedom so basic to the American way of life.
The lifestyle options we have come to enjoy, and occasionally take for granted, resulted from huge investments by previous generations. We are living in the cities and towns they built, driving on the road networks they shaped and enjoying the prosperity they initiated.
Many discussions focus on commuting, but less than one trip in five that Americans take is work-related – so congestion robs people every day of time from work, home, school, families and doing the things they enjoy when they travel. When it comes to taking vacations and weekend getaways, traffic congestion makes it more challenging to reach the beaches, theme parks, recreation areas and other places Americans love to go. Even in areas with little congestion, traffic bottlenecks and congestion elsewhere raise residents’ costs of living and impact their quality of life.
